Observability: the difference between insight and control

Do you really have insight into what's happening in your IT environment?

You notice an application is slowing down. An alert comes in, a dashboard turns red, and an error message appears somewhere in the logs. So, something is going on. But what exactly? Where does the problem start? And what's the impact?

Monitoring makes it visible that something is going wrong. But it doesn't yet provide an answer as to why. And that's precisely where the difference between insight and control begins.

Monitoring shows that something is going wrong

Monitoring is essential. It helps to identify deviations and to observe systems. When an application slows down or an error message occurs, that becomes visible.

However, monitoring primarily tells us *that* something is going wrong, not why. Consequently, the real work often only begins after an alert has been triggered. We need to search, compare, and analyse to determine the cause.

Monitoring is therefore often reactive in practice: it signals a problem, but doesn't yet provide direction.

Observability shows why it's happening

Observability takes things a step further, not by collecting more data, but by connecting existing data. By looking at logs, metrics, and traces in context, a complete picture emerges. Problems become not only visible, but also understandable. You see where something originates, how it develops, and what impact it has.

Where monitoring provides isolated signals, observability offers context. And it is precisely this context that enables faster and more targeted action.

From reacting to understanding

The difference between monitoring and observability becomes most apparent when something goes wrong.

In an environment running solely on monitoring, every incident begins with an investigation. What happened? What is the cause? Which systems are involved?

With observability, these connections are often already visible. The information is not scattered but connected. This makes it clearer what is happening more quickly and allows for immediate intervention. This means less time spent on analysis, faster recovery actions, and less reliance on individual knowledge.

When you don't just see what's happening, but also understand why, the next step emerges: recognising patterns. Deviations become more apparent. Problems become visible before they have an impact. With that, your way of working shifts from reacting to incidents to looking ahead.

The role of observability within your data strategy

Observability isn't a standalone tool you add to an existing environment. It demands coherence in the way data is collected and used. Without integration and a clear architecture, signals remain fragmented and context is lost. Observability only truly works when systems are aligned and data is interpreted correctly.

Observability is often seen as part of IT management, but its impact is broader. It helps organisations to better understand systems and make decisions faster. It contributes to reliability, insight, and control. Without insight, there is no grip. And without grip, data is rarely utilised optimally.

That's why observability isn't just an IT issue, but a crucial part of a broader data strategy.
