AI without observability? Then you're missing the basics

Many AI initiatives start with a clear idea of what they should deliver. But in execution, things often get stuck. Not due to a lack of technology, but due to a lack of insight. It's not always clear what's happening, where deviations arise, and how reliable the data is.

AI is only as good as the environment it runs on. And that's often where the limitation lies.

AI asks for insight, not just data.

Data is usually readily available. Logs, metrics and events are continuously collected and stored.

However, real insight is often lacking. Data is scattered across systems and tools, connections are not immediately visible, and it takes time to understand what exactly is happening. As a result, AI often remains a black box in practice. You get outcomes, but it's difficult to trace what they are based on and how reliable they are.

Without that insight, it becomes difficult to actually trust AI, let alone deploy it in processes where reliability is essential.

Where observability makes the difference

Observability brings coherence to an environment where data and signals are often fragmented. By connecting logs, metrics, and traces, an integrated picture emerges of what is happening within systems and applications.

This not only makes it possible to see that something is happening, but also to understand why. Deviations are recognised more quickly, causes are easier to trace, and system behaviour becomes more predictable. This transforms the role of data: from isolated signals to usable information.

And precisely that forms the basis for effectively deploying AI.

Van experiment naar toepassing

When the foundation is in place, the way organisations view AI also changes. It shifts from experimenting to implementing.

AI will then no longer be a standalone initiative, but a logical continuation of a data environment that is manageable and understandable. Think of applications where information is found faster, deviations are automatically signalled, or analyses are used for better steering.

Not because AI is the goal in itself, but because the underlying data is reliable enough to actually build upon.

Observability and AI strengthen each other

Observability and AI are not separate worlds, but rather they reinforce each other. Observability provides the transparency and reliability needed for AI to function. At the same time, AI can help to recognise patterns faster and accelerate analyses.

However, that interplay only works if the foundation is sound. Without insight into what happens within systems, AI remains limited to isolated applications, without real impact.

Start at the beginning

The tendency is often to jump straight into AI. Understandable, as the possibilities are vast and the pressure to keep pace is high. However, the real question lies more in the foundation: do you have sufficient insight into your data and systems to be able to trust AI?

Observability is not an endpoint, but a necessary step. It provides overview, cohesion, and predictability. And with it, an environment where AI is not only possible, but also actually adds value.
