AI, GenAI and Agentic AI: the differences explained

AI is everywhere. But anyone who delves into the subject quickly gets lost in the forest for the trees: AI, GenAI, Agentic AI, the terms are flying around. What exactly do they mean, and what can you do with them as an organisation? In this blog, we will clearly explain the differences and show you how to deploy these technologies smartly and safely in your data strategy.

What is AI?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the collective term for systems that perform tasks which normally require human intelligence. Think of pattern recognition, making predictions, or taking decisions based on data.

Examples of AI in practice:

  • Search algorithms that search and rank millions of documents.
  • Fraud detection systems that detect anomalous transactions.
  • Medical applications that analyse X-ray images.

AI is therefore not new. Research into artificial intelligence has been conducted since the 1950s. The difference now? Computing power, data volume, and tool availability are unprecedented, causing AI applications to gain ground at breakneck speed.

What is Generative AI (GenAI)?

Generative AI is a subcategory of AI. Where traditional AI often revolves around classifying or predicting, GenAI can create new content.

Examples of GenAI:

  • Generate text (ChatGPT, Gemini).
  • Creating images or videos (DALL-E, MidJourney, Sora).
  • Schrijven of verbeteren van code.

For organisations, this offers enormous opportunities: from automated reporting and document generation to contextual search results that go beyond a simple overview.

A concrete example: an employee searches thousands of documents for a policy rule. A GenAI model can not only find the right paragraph but also summarise its core meaning and indicate what context is relevant.

What is Agentic AI?

Agentic AI goes a step further. It concerns AI systems that autonomously carry out tasks and make decisions. They often work as an ‘agent’ that combines multiple AI models and makes them operate in a coordinated manner.

Examples of Agentic AI:

  • Een AI-agent die klantvragen beantwoordt door data uit CRM, e-mail en kennisbanken samen te voegen.
  • An agent that automatically scans security logs, flags anomalies, and immediately creates a ticket in the system.
  • A digital employee that initiates processes without human intervention.

What's the difference with GenAI? While GenAI primarily creates, Agentic AI can also act. It's not just an assistant, but an executive force.

What does this mean for organisations?

The three terms are not buzzwords, but building blocks that complement each other.

  • AI helps you analyse faster and smarter.
  • GenAI enhances those analyses with context, summaries and creative output.
  • Agentic AI automatiseert volledige workflows en neemt werk uit handen.

At the same time, this also raises questions: how do you safeguard security and transparency? How do you prevent AI from making wrong decisions? And how do you ensure that the technology aligns with your existing data strategy?

The PuurData approach

At PuurData, we believe that AI only becomes truly valuable when it is used in a pragmatic and future-proof way. Not isolated experiments, but smart solutions that strengthen your data strategy.

Search AI: Elastic + GenAI
With Search AI, we combine the power of Elastic Search with Generative AI. This means that search results are not only available faster, but are also enriched with context and insights. This way, employees don't just find information, but also understand it better.

Consultancy: guidance from strategy to implementation
AI is not a plug-and-play solution. Our consultants guide organisations step by step: from strategy and implementation to optimisation. Always with a focus on efficiency, security and future-proofing.

Pragmatic and dependable
Our starting point: bringing complex technology back to understandable and applicable solutions. We’ll show you how to benefit from AI today and how to prepare your organisation for the next step, such as Agentic AI.

Finally

AI, GenAI and Agentic AI are not isolated buzzwords, but links in a development that makes data smarter and more valuable. Where AI analyses, GenAI adds context and creativity. And Agentic AI automates complete tasks.

For organisations, this means enormous opportunities: faster searching, better insights and more efficiency. But also the responsibility to deploy this technology safely and strategically.

At PuurData, we help organisations to do exactly that: pragmatically, reliably and with a focus on results.
